These animals feature a coiled, spiraled shell with a muscular foot that protrudes from its opercular opening. The shell of most knobbed whelks is dextral, meaning that it is right-handed. If the shell is held in front of the viewer, with the spiral end up and the opening facing the viewer, the opening will be on the animal's right side. The body of the snail is divided into head, abdomen and foot. Two pairs of tentacles are located on its head: one senses light, while the other is used for touch and smell.

These animals can vary in size from under an inch in length (shell length) to more than 2 feet. The largest whelk is the trumpet whelk, which grows to over 2 feet.
